Sowing Early sowings in trays under glass at 14°C, only lightly covering with compost. Later sowings in the growing site 1cm (½”) deep in rows 30cm (12”) apart. Planting Glasshouse seedlings should be pricked off into trays when about 15cm (6”) tall, 5cm (2”) apart. Harden off in growing site 15cm (6”) apart in early April. Outdoor sowings should be thinned in two stages until spacings of 15cm (6”) between plants is achieved. Growing Tips Onions require a very fertile soil. Dig the Onion bed in the Autumn incorporating manure or compost.
